Stoves: how to choose the one that suits you best

By now, we all know that there are different ways to heat our homes in the coldest winter months ... From the fireplace to the classic radiators, to the stoves.

It is precisely the latter that in recent times represent the heating system par excellence, probably the most used and the most appreciated for its versatility both from its power and actual design.

However, we must admit that although a stove is undoubtedly convenient from an economic point of view, without proper guidance, it may seem an almost dispersive tool because it is often full of different features. Moreover, there are many types on the market, and each of this is suitable for specific needs.

With the help of this guide, you will be able to get a clearer picture of the situation, and above all, by gathering the right information, you will be able to understand which type of stove is most suitable for you and your home.

Types

Let's start by analyzing the most common types of stoves today:

  • Pellet stove
  • Wood-burning stove
  • Gas stove
  • Electric heater
  • Halogen stove

As you might have guessed, this is a differentiation based mainly on the type of power but ... Now, let's see together what is explicitly meant to each type!

Pellet stove

The pellet stove is one of the most convenient types in terms of efficiency and consumption costs. The pellet is, in fact, a fuel with a very high thermal yield, practically comparable to real wood, it is available everywhere (DIY shops, supermarkets etc.) and it has a rather low cost: consider that with just over 5 euros, you can buy 15 kg of pellets which, according to its quality and origin, can feed a stove without interruption for up to 12 hours.

Pellet stoves are suitable for those who, for space reasons, cannot afford the installation of a real fireplace and for those that for the same reason, do not have a dedicated space in which to store wood.

Wood-Burning Stove

The wood-Burning stove is an excellent investment for those who in addition to its primary purpose of heating the environment, are also looking for a real piece of furniture.  Therefore it is the ideal type for those who do not want to overlook the aesthetic taste.

The wood-burning stove is the most convenient type after the pellet stove, and above all, it also allows a significant reduction of CO2 emissions in the environment.

Also, the wood has an unrivalled thermal performance and not by chance; it can guarantee a 24-hour ignition autonomy without necessarily having to recharge the fuel and as if that were not enough ... It allows you to take advantage of the heat of the embers even after turning off the system.

Gas stove

The most significant advantage of the gas stove is to generate hot air immediately and with low consumption. Its most common variant for reasons of convenience in transporting from one room to another is the portable version but, regardless of this aspect, they all operate at low consumption with radiant LPG or natural gas.

The gas stove is capable of heating a medium-small room in a few minutes (it is equipped with numerous safety systems. It does not require a chimney and emits a slight odour only during the first seconds of ignition, in any case, this problem is entirely solvable by buying, with a few more euros, a specially designed gas to zero this possibility. Furthermore, its autonomy is excellent, and even if used for many hours, the gas stove does not need continuous refilling.

Electric stove

The electric stove is probably the most convenient type of stove to use, as it does not require fuel such as gas, wood or pellets. This type of stove uses electrical energy and transforms it into heat thanks to a heating element capable of rapidly spreading heat into the room. The most advanced models use ceramic heating elements that heat even faster and cool down just as quickly. In any case, we must admit that its strong point is undoubtedly its low price and the type of power supply that does not require the use of fuel, which makes it an eco-friendly and economical tool even in the long term.

Halogen stove

The halogen stove is also powered by electricity and consists of a frame inside which there are halogen candles with low energy consumption, compared to quartz candles. Each halogen candle has a power consumption of 400/500 watts. Everyone has enjoyed the advantages of this type of stove, which today is one of the most common, also because you can buy it from 15 euros or a little more.

Its power is adjustable using the select buttons at the top, through which you decide how many candles to light or whether to rotate its structure to radiate heat in all directions. However, it must be stressed that its heating capacity is limited to small rooms.  The heat can only be felt in its immediate vicinity; it is, therefore, the ideal solution for those who do not have high demands and need to heat a studio or a private office at low cost.

Tips for purchase

Although the essential elements to evaluate during the selection may change according to the type of stove you intend to purchase, below you will find some advice to follow, applicable to all types of stoves on the market:

  • Always make sure you choose a stove that complies with European standards, as even a simple electric stove may involve risks if it does not have the appropriate safety systems.
  • Keep in mind the size of your house to avoid buying a stove of unsuitable power either by excess or by default. To prevent this inconvenience, there is a special calculation, today the maximum capacity of a stove is almost always shown on the packaging.
  • Except in the case of the electric stove, if you want to reduce the frequency of recharging, pay attention to the size of the tank because the larger it is, the less often you will have to "refuel".
  • Always choose qualified and reliable brands and make sure you carry out the necessary maintenance operations (cleaning, correct use, etc.) which are in most cases listed in the instruction manuals.
  • Evaluate carefully and in advance the size of the stove, to avoid it clashing with the space in which you intend to place it. Above all, evaluate the weight of the stove and if you are buying it yourself, make sure that it can be transported safely and comfortably for you and those around you

Also, it is always good to make sure that after-sales service is available in case you have any doubts about its operation or even to ask for information about the warranty and its outline.
